What does your supporting member fee do? It helps us fund many unique & important research projects & small seed productions. The results of these are seen throughout the garden catalog. Many varieties are held exclusively for supporting members because the seed is in short supply & we feel that those who help make the research & seed production possible, should be the first to benefit, if anyone does. Thanks for being a supporting member, you make a difference in what we can do and offer in our garden seed catalog.

Why Grow a Garden?

...and why store up enough of one harvest to last until the next?

Here is a personal experience that shocked me into taking unknown possibilities more seriously and which encouraged me to hedge against them by cultivating greater self sufficiency. Some 20 years ago I was beginning my work to develop a school farm at a secondary school in a large African country. The idea was to provide the school with a greater self-sufficiency and among other things, encourage an appreciation of agriculture. My work had not progressed far when the nation was thrown into turmoil of a currency change. Instantly food, fuel, and medical supplies became priceless in terms of money. And, in the months that followed, unless you had a producing vegetable garden or a good stash of food, or fuel, or medical supplies you just plain suffered. I learned that cities are not good places to be when a crises like that occurs (unless you like trouble with a capital "T") Cities were the centers of riot, thievery, and suffering. Out of that experience, like I indicated before, came a greater realization of the value self-sufficiency and preparation have. We go to great lengths to prepare for earthquakes, hurricanes, medical problems and accidents, why not things like this? Perhaps you will never experience such rugged times (I believe you will) but it wouldn't hurt to have some preparation, would it? ...just in case? Remember 1929? ...yeah, I don't either but I know what happened to me 20 years ago. That garden I want you to grow. Why not enjoy it, enjoy it, and if a crisis comes, hey! maybe you'll be eating.
